Press Release

Washington D.C.– Congressman Denver Riggleman (R-Va.) gave a video address today supporting the rights of the people of Hong Kong.  This comes following an announcement from the Communist Chinese Government that would greatly reduce the freedoms enjoyed by the people of Hong Kong. Congressman Denver Riggleman is the co-chair for the House China Task Force pillars on National Security and Technology.

"It is clear that China, led by their Communist government, is a threat to freedom and democracy around the world.  Just this morning, they initiated a policy to strip the citizens of Hong Kong of their basic human rights. This is unacceptable,” said Congressman Riggleman.  “The people of Hong Kong have lived peacefully under ‘one nation two systems’ for a generation.  To take this away from them is a threat to peace and democracy."

You can watch the video here, and you can read a full transcript of the speech below. For more information visit Congressman Riggleman’s China Task Force webpage here.

Hello, 5th District!

Today I am back on Capitol Hill, working for you during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently I was appointed to the House China Task Force, a group that will reinforce Congressional efforts to counter current and emerging cross-jurisdictional threats from China.

I was named co-chair of the National Security and Technology pillars of this task force.  Throughout my career, I have focused on emerging technologies that can help keep our nation safe our infrastructure secure. We must update and improve our defense capabilities to address and counter Chinese actions.

It is clear that China, led by their Communist government, is a threat to freedom and democracy around the world.  Just this morning, they initiated a policy to strip the citizens of Hong Kong of their basic human rights. This is unacceptable.  The people of Hong Kong have lived peacefully under “one nation two systems” for a generation.  To take this away from them is a threat to peace and democracy.

The Task Force will continue to work on measures that counter Chinese aggression and protect American interests, liberties, and freedoms.

Thank you, and stay safe 5th District!
