Yesterday, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy announced the creation of a China Task Force which will develop policies, ideas, and legislative strategy to combat the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party;
In the coming weeks and months, I will work as a member of this task force to find common-sense solutions to these complicated issues. This task force was supposed to be bipartisan, but democrats walked away from the table. This is disappointing, but I remain committed to finding solutions to the problems we face.
In the past few weeks alone, China hid the severity of the COVID-19 virus and manipulated statistics, leaving the world reeling from a global pandemic. They still refuse to allow international experts to investigate or share viral samples of COVID-19 with the scientific community. Perhaps most troubling of all they have forced the disappearance of whistleblowers and continue carrying out a comprehensive propaganda campaign to spread misinformation.
Research from the University of Southampton shows that 95 percent of the world’s current COVID-19 crisis could have been avoided if China simply acted like a responsible global citizen.
I will continue to work to address the spread of COVID-19 in the 5th District and the affects it has on our economy. Congress is continuing to work to make sure the Paycheck Protection Program is available to help workers and businesses that have been forced to close during this time. I ask that you continue to practice social distancing and if you are feeling sick call your doctor before leaving your home.
If you need help with a federal agency, please contact my Charlottesville Office at (434) 973-9631. At this time, all Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC, including the National Zoo, are temporarily closed to the public. Additionally, tours of the White House, US Capitol, FBI, and Library of Congress have been suspended to help contain the outbreak and prevent community spread.
Member of Congress
