On the Hill with Denver Riggleman

February 14, 2020

This week I introduced a new bill to help increase access to rural broadband in the 5th District.  H.R.5844, the ACCESS Rural America Act, will provide regulatory relief to small broadband companies so they can raise capital and add investors without being required to file costly SEC reporting requirements. Under current law broadband companies are required to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) when they reach 500 non-accredited investors. My bill would change that number to 1,250 non-accredited investors. The ACCESS Rural America Act will allow companies to focus on deploying broadband services in rural communities, not burdensome federal regulations.

Since coming to Congress, bringing broadband internet to rural parts of my district has been a top priority of mine. By cutting this arcane regulation we can help these companies bring high-speed internet to our communities quickly and more efficiently.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump released his proposed budget for 2021. It contained sensible cuts to out of control federal spending. Reducing our national debt is an important issue and I look forward to working with the President to fight waste in our federal budget that leads to debt. In the weeks to come I will continue to urge my colleagues to pass a budget that works for the American people.

Additionally, this week I was recently honored by the White Coat Waste Project as a 2019 Waste Warrior award for my work to combat wasteful taxpayer-funded animal experiments. These experiments were not only wasteful they were harmful to animals. I will always stand up for what's right.

If you need help with a federal agency, please contact my Charlottesville Office at (434) 973-9631 or see my staff during our mobile office hours on Tuesday's across the 5th District.  If you would like to schedule a tour of either the Capitol, or another federal building in Washington, including the White House or the FBI, please contact our Washington D.C. office at (202) 225-4711.
